Crisis on the Frontline – Wyndham RDF!
There is a funding crisis in local government, and now is the time for ASU members to fight back.
One of the effects of underfunding is excessive use of casuals. Whilst we acknowledge there is a valid reason for using casuals to cover short term skills gaps the use of casuals at the RDF is excessive.
Figures provided by Council show that 27 staff have been engaged as casuals for more than 6 months. Of those, 13 have been engaged as casuals for more than 5 years.
Under your enterprise agreement, casuals have the right to convert to permanent employment after 12 months after completing regular or systematic hours. The Australian Services Union has written to Council requesting permanent employment for these casual employees. We call on Wyndham City Council to immediately honour this obligation in accordance with the enterprise agreement.
