ASU Delegate at the Leongatha Depot, Gary Beard, stood up for members in the Parks crew and won them an allowance they should have already been receiving.

Gary told us that they regularly undertake routine maintenance and running repairs and asked us to check how the Maintenance Allowance operates.

Gary believed his workmates hold and use skills in maintenance and repairs, so the right thing to do was for their employer to recognise that.

We reviewed your enterprise agreement clause, and it was clear that parks workers ought to be recognised and rewarded.

The ASU had to argue the case with exact details and clear examples of the maintenance work Gary and his workmates do.

ASU Assistant Secretary, Melissa Wainwright, and ASU Branch Executive President, Billy King, worked with our legal team to draft a Memorandum Of Understanding (MOU).

We then met with Shire managers to negotiate that no -one was left behind, especially part-timers, and to ensure you also received your backpay.

ASU Assistant Secretary Melissa Wainwright summed it up: ‘Gary and his workmates work hard, they really deserve this.’
