Last year Yarra Ranges Shire Council Officers put up a recommendation to your elected Councillors that they privatise in-home aged care currently provided to the elderly residents of your municipality. The Councillors voted to delay the decision until after the final report of the Royal Commission into Aged Care was delivered.

The report is now in and your Councillors are again being briefed on 19 March. We expect the recommendation from Council Officers will still be to privatise these vital services.

Despite what Councils say – the real reason for privatisation is to cut costs through reducing pay and conditions for staff. Amongst other things, the Royal Commission has recommended that the aged care system needs better qualified and better-paid workers – which Council already has!

We need to send a message to Council that quality Council run aged care services are important to ASU members who work or live in Yarra Ranges Shire Council and the community.
