ASU members at VicRoads were happy to see that the state government did not decide to privatise Vicroads in the recent state budget.
However, the Andrews Government has not ruled out privatisation of this essential regulatory service in a future budget.
So the ASU is going to keep making the case to government that VicRoads must remain in public hands.
When services are privatised; wages, conditions, and job security always fall. Workers too often lose the security of long-term public-sector employment and face a working life of insecurity.
The ASU’s response is a practical one – we are going to point out to politicians, including the Victorian Treasurer, that the cost of privatisation for dedicated VicRoads workers is too high.
In a post-Covid-19 world, nobody should be pushed from public sector role into insecure employment – workers deserve better than that.
