As Hobsons Bay City Council employees, it’s been another tough year, but we made it through by sticking together and standing strong for what we believe in.
After starting the year rolling out widespread industrial action, things took an unexpected turn with the pandemic becoming everyone’s focus for the rest of 2020.
Despite this challenge, ASU members continued to fight for their pay and conditions and stuck together all year resulting in the CEO intervening and working with the Unions to reach an outcome which the ASU can recommend members vote yes for when voting takes place in early 2021.
During this bargaining campaign, ASU members have withstood:
- A hostile approach to bargaining since mid-2019
- Years of holding out on pay increases
- Suggestions that your EBA may be scrapped altogether
- Threats to lock you out of your workplace
- A pandemic disrupting and delaying bargaining even more
Throughout all of this, we have not taken a backward step, not once. Every meeting was better attended than the ones before it, members from every part of HBCC participated in industrial action, and Union membership increased by over 25% ensuring we are even stronger in future years!
None of this would have been possible without the amazing leadership and strength shown by your ASU delegates.
We can now look forward to a more collaborative relationship with HBCC in 2021 and beyond now that we have ensured ASU Organisers will be at consultative committee meetings to keep the best interests of ASU members at the forefront of decision making at council.
Have a safe and enjoyable break, and we’ll see you all in 2021.
