The Stonnington City Council announcement that 246 employees have been stood down which includes 125 permanent employees and 121 casual employees across a range of areas within council is a terrible decision.
The ASU’s clear position is that nobody should be stood-down and any worker who has been stood-down should be immediately reinstated.
ASU Organiser Emma Bagg has been in contact with ASU Delegates at Stonnington City Council to talk about how we should respond to this shocking decision.
Yesterday, the ASU wrote to the CEO of Stonnington City Council requesting an urgent meeting or teleconference.
- There is still valuable work that needs to be done – work may need to be done in a different way but it can still be done
- There are extra community service needs, like supporting and checking in on older members of the community, that council workers can meet
- Council’s income for the year hasn’t fallen so much that it needs to stand-down workers.
The ASU has also written to all councillors about the terrible and unnecessary decision to stand-down staff at Stonnington City Council.
We will be holding an urgent zoom video conference meeting with ASU members when we have some further information from Council.
Through this difficult time, the ASU is by your side.
