The ASU has written to your CEO this morning regarding a press release published yesterday by MPSC on the council website.

The press release from council was about the adopted 2020/21 annual budget. The ASU has a particular concern with a line published in the fifth paragraph that states;

“Throughout the next financial year there will be no wage increases for staff and no reduction in services for the community”

As we had just commenced our first enterprise bargaining meeting on Tuesday 18 August, this statement flies in the face of “good faith bargaining”.

We have strongly encouraged your CEO to remove this release immediately and put out a public statement with his intention to “bargain in good faith” with the EA committee.

The council and CEO are already conditioning employees to accept no pay rise when people and the economy need it most. It was been well covered in the media that austerity measures, particularly concerning workers’ wages are not the way to lift an otherwise sluggish economy out of potential recession.

No pay rise is about the worst possible solution for the council to push.

You will see in the coming days, council is looking to strip out all the fantastic conditions and entitlements that we have all fought for over decades. The previous CEO took to your EA with a razor blade, this CEO is looking to do the same! Don’t be fooled.

There has never been a more important time to join your Union. The ASU recruitment competition is underway until September, $500 is up for grabs for the member who recruits the most new people.

This attack on your wages and conditions only succeeds is if the employee’s let it.

The ASU is by your side, we will fight this with you all the way.
