Last state election the Liberal-National Government split Sunbury from the City of Hume. They relied on a poll with limited details being released.

Along with many local residents, the ASU believed that this decision would increase costs for residents and decrease services.

Labor stopped the process. Independent auditors found the process lacked adequate community consultation and had failed to explain the impact on local residents. They recommended against the split because it would lead to:

  • Increased rates of up to 14%;
  • Reduced services.

Now, the Liberals have said they still want to split Sunbury from Hume.

Under the Liberals you’ll get half the Council, at twice the price. Increased costs, decreased services.

ASU delegates and members from Nillumbik, and ASU staff turning up at tonight’s Council Meeting to show their support for members providing Kerbside Waste Services. Standing up for keeping council jobs in house and no privatisation of waste in Nillumbik!! In the Bin!! 💪

UPDATE: after 3 hours of waiting for the waste management item to come up, and some debate on the issue, Councillors voted 5-2 to proceed with market testing. But hey, the Mayor said our members do such a great job they’ve got nothing to worry about. If only it were so simple, but the fight’s not over. Fair Work here we come. Watch this space comrades...well done to all the members who lasted the distance past 10:30, solidarity!👏👏
