This message comes from your ASU Bargaining Team – Taylah, Bede and Tim.
You’ll likely have heard from the CEO recently, informing you that despite a few of your current conditions being above the award, YSAS is still considering each claim we put to them. We’re not sure where that information came from, as Andrew doesn’t attend bargaining meetings, but all 4 meetings so far have been very different to the picture he’s painting.
Management has straight up told us that the award is ‘good enough’ and they don’t want to give you anything extra. They also reckon the agreement should be exclusively about YSAS-specific stuff and not deal with pesky systemic things like the need for wellbeing leave, gender transition leave or paid family violence leave for casual workers.
We’ve told management repeatedly that good pay and conditions attract and retain staff, but they’re refusing pay rises and want to kick workers off the agreement. How attractive is that?
Oh, and those above-award conditions? Most of ‘em aren’t regularly used, so cost YSAS very little. The others are mostly comparable to conditions at every other community services employer, which also goes above the National Employment Standards and the Award because those are the bare minimum.
We know that you’re worth more than what management is proposing, and you won’t leave your Head Office colleagues out in the cold. That’s why we’re fighting for a good agreement for all of you, and if management keeps up their current positions we’ll come back to you to discuss steps to make them bargain properly.
We hope it won’t come to that.
