Footscray Town Hall Refurbishment
ASU organiser Lorraine Di Pietrantonio held a meeting at the Town Hall on Wednesday 17 April where the refurbishment was discussed in great detail.  Members actively participated in discussions and raised several questions and concerns.

The ASU is collating member feedback, suggestions and concerns and writing to Council to ask for further information.  Information regarding time frames, interim measures whilst build is underway, how staff can provide input and the possibility of hot desking was sought by members. Once a response has been provided we will be in a position to update members via another meeting.

If you were unable to attend the meeting last week but wish to raise some questions or concerns please contact ASU Organiser Lorraine Di Pietrantonio via the details below by COB Monday 29 April.

The role of union delegate- What does it entail?
Union delegates are the workplace representatives of union members and work to ensure members have a voice in work place matters that impact on their wages, conditions and working lives.

Workplaces with an active union feel more consulted and involved in their workplace.

Union delegates help to break down barriers in workplaces – they unite workers and create a community so workers don’t feel isolated.

The delegates’ roles and responsibilities include the following;

  • Grow the union by recruiting new members to the union
  • Discuss with union members/staff any work related issues they may have and provide information and support.
  • Meet regularly with an organiser of the union.
  • Receive training from the union to perform union duties.
  • Delegates represent members, in meetings with the their managers, team leaders and peers regarding matters concerning their employment/performance
  • Participate in EBA negotiations
  • Participate in Consultative committee meetings

Union delegates are the vital link between your union official and members within your workplace.

ASU delegates are provided with training to perform the role of delegate.  We understand that each delegate may have different strengths, as such a delegate committee with multiple delegates will allow you to utilise your strengths in certain areas and share the load.

Participating in your union is your opportunity to participate in positive change within the workplace for yourself, your workplace and your industry.

The Majority of the workgroups at Maribyrnong Council are represented by an ASU delegate however there are still several gaps.

If you are interested in stepping up into the role or finding out more about the role then please contact ASU Organiser Lorraine Di Pietrantonio via the details below.
