The ASU is proud to announce that five Parking Officers are now permanent employees at Maribyrnong.
ASU Delegate Rosana Rivera rang the union to get advice on this and then met with the ASU Organiser. We reviewed the clauses in the Maribyrnong Agreement that cover types of employment and spoke with the workers affected by insecure employment arrangements. Some were members and they persuaded others to join our union. We drafted a letter calling on the employer to review the fixed-term contracts. Our claim for permanent employment is in this letter.
This issue affects members and potential members. If you are employed in a role that needs to be done regularly then you may have a claim to convert to permanent work. There are some exclusions. If you are doing seasonal work, projects funded by a grant or filling in for another worker on leave (LSL, family, injury) then it’s not a permanent vacancy. Our advice is to put in a written request for a review of your type of employment. The ASU will help you speak with your managers about this.
We can win. See the response from management here.
By encouraging your workmates to join the ASU we will have a stronger voice for workers at Maribyrnong City Council. It is easy for anyone who is not yet a member to join online at www.asu.asn.au/asujoin or see ASU Delegate Ron Medler for a membership form.
