Sex Discrimination Commissioner Jenkins reports that one in three people working in federal parliament have experienced some kind of sexual harassment, including 40% of women and 26% of men.

Parliamentarians may express shock and surprised at these findings, but anyone who has worked at parliament knows that this sexist culture has been an open secret for a very long time. ASU members have demanded action to fix this problem, but parliamentarians wouldn’t act.

It’s not good enough and something needs to change.

Commissioner Jenkins has made 28 recommendations to fix parliament’s broken culture.

Commissioner Jenkins’ proposals are no more than the basic standards we expect for each workplace. MPs and their staff should be held to the same standards and offered the same protections as any other worker in any other workplace.

The Commonwealth Government must act now and implement all 28 recommendations of Commissioner Jenkins Report.

For many staffers and former staffers, this will be a very difficult time. Do not hesitate to reach out to specialist support for survivors of sexual violence like 1800RESPECT (1800 737 732) or generalist mental health services like Lifeline (13 11 14) and Beyond Blue (1300 22 4636).
