Shame on Hume City Council

Hume City Council leadership should be ashamed of themselves; they have made the decision to stand-down staff in those services which have been temporarily closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Hume has made this decision without any consultation or discussions with your ASU representatives.

Hume City Council is not in any financial risk, in fact, Council do have a very healthy balance sheet and can afford to continue paying full-time/part-time staff as per their contracted hours.

If the Federal/State Government makes the decision to have a complete shutdown/lockdown, then that would be the time to stand-down staff, explaining other special paid leave and paid leave entitlements, but that decision has not been taken.

Hume City Council has chosen to pull the trigger now with numerous staff about to be stood down, throwing them, and their families, onto the financial scrapheap when they run out of leave entitlements and money.

ASU has put forward other alternatives for those staff who services have closed and could possibly be redeployed too.

Other Councils are continuing to work with the ASU in finding other redeployment options for those staff affected by services being temporarily shut down.

ASU will be writing to the Council to outline your concerns and seeking a meeting to discuss this unnecessary stand-down of staff in the affected areas.

Please circulate this newsletter to all other staff members and put on your notice boards and in your lunchrooms and encourage non-members to join their union.
