Thank you to all the early learning educators at Hume City Council who recently attended a member meeting and raised their concerns. This week your ASU delegates and officials raised several issues felt across the service. Some of these included:
- High use of agency staff across Children’s Services. 37 Agency staff currently work within the service. Council will be providing a breakdown to the ASU on the reason and length for agency engagement positions including which have been advertised and which have not.
- Changes without consultation. ASU delegates provided examples of where change has occurred including rosters, without consultation. The ASU reminded Council that consultation with employees is required under the Enterprise Agreement.
- Members feeling undervalued, low morale, incompetent and treated unfairly in comparison with agency staff. Council have taken this feedback on board and will investigate this further.
- Agency staff offered shifts/extra hours ahead of Casual staff. The ASU has requested that additional hours and shifts are offered to permanent part-time and casual staff before agency staff. Council agreed and will send communication to leadership to ensure they are following this process.
A follow-up meeting with HR Children’s Services Management and delegates will be scheduled in December and further communication will be sent then. In the meantime, please contact your local delegates Kerry Smith, Julie Woonton and Takai Pare for any issues.
