As you should by now be aware, Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong City Councils have put their home care services out to tender, inviting private or not-for-profit organisations to take over the in-home-care of their residents.
The ASU does not support this, and have been repeatedly urging these councils to continue providing services directly while the funding exists for them to do so (currently until mid-2020, but is speculated to be extended beyond that).
As part of talking to the community, the ASU will be hosting a free community meeting at 6:30pm on Monday 10 December at the Yarraville Community Centre to talk about what the changes are, what they will mean, and how we can all help fight to stop them.
It’s free to attend, and you can register at: https://tinyurl.com/SaveHomeCare
It had been anticipated that a decision on outsourcing would be made at Council Meetings on 11 December 2018; however we have been advised that the decision will now be postponed until February 2019.
This is welcome news, however only provides a small delay to what we believe would be a terrible and damaging decision were the councils to proceed with outsourcing these services.
What it does mean is that we have some space to continue the discussion with the community, and talking to them about the importance of fighting the funding changes, and of their council remaining a service provider until there’s certainty around those funding changes actually happening.
If you are concerned about the impact of Councils decision on the loss of care please register to attend, and you can register at: https://tinyurl.com/SaveHomeCare
With an upcoming Federal election and an impending royal commission into the provision of aged care, uncertainty is rife within the sector. This is not the time for responsible councils to make such an important decision!
We encourage everyone who wants to see these changes stopped to come along, talk about their own experiences and concerns, and hear about how they can help stop this madness.
