ASU members at Hindmarsh Shire Council recently met to discuss our campaign for better funding of local services, secure jobs and fair wage increases: Crisis on the Frontline.
Over the past few years we have seen councils starved of funds which has led to cuts to services, outsourcing and privatisation, increased insecure work and depressed wage growth.
Right now, thousands of council workers across Victoria are fighting and taking action because their employers are offering wage increases of around 1 per cent. Many other councils have already foreshadowed wage offers below the 1.5 per cent rate cap.
This is our Crisis on the Frontline.
Our campaign will change the narrative around local government and will unite the community around the importance of strong – and properly funded – council services.
The first step in this campaign is to acknowledge, celebrate and publicise the incredible contributions our members make to their communities each and every day. We want to share and celebrate the stories of those who go above and beyond and make a difference: our Local Heroes.
The only way we can win better funding, secure jobs and fair wage increases is to have a strong union with all workers working together. We encourage anybody who is not yet a union member to consider the benefits of ASU membership and to join the ASU
