During their November Ordinary Council Meeting, Kentish Councillors moved a motion of ‘confidence and support’ in the management team at Kentish and Latrobe. During the debate around the motion, Councillors lashed out at the ASU and made several false and misleading statements in open Council, on the public record.

“I believe the ASU are acting as a wrecking ball around parts of the state”.

“I would be concerned if we had formal complaints of bullying before our Council, which we don’t”.

“I haven’t seen bullying behaviour from within the Council, but I have from without”.

These sorts of comments are not only inflammatory, they are categorically false.

Firstly, the ASU has raised allegations of bullying and toxic cultures at just four Tasmanian councils in the past year. We are fighting legitimate issues where members have expressed their genuine concerns. We will continue to raise concerns about poor culture and management attitudes where we find it necessary to alleviate these concerns for our members. We refute the suggestion that we are simply acting as a wrecking ball.

Secondly, the Councillors at both councils are fully aware that there have been formal complaints raised directly with them by employees who were leaving the organisation. We are aware of at least three of these complaints being made within the last year or so, but there are likely more. To say they have no formal complaints of bullying is a blatant lie.

These Councillors know the claims we are making are true. They should stop making false and misleading statements to defend their positions.

Today, we will be writing to Kentish Council’s Mayor demanding a retraction of the public statements made about your union. Should they fail to retract the commentary at their December Council meeting, we will be considering our legal options under the Code of Conduct.
