What’s good for the good is good for the gander?
The Director of Local Government has announced an increase to Councillor Allowances of 2.4% from 1 November following the June 2020 updates to the ABS Wage Price Index.
This combined with recent increases to public sector wages makes a strong case for Council to come good and lift the unilateral wage freeze on workers.
Acting Premier Jeremey Rockliff speaking on public sector union won wage increases said:
“We know the Budget and the economy have taken a hit from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, however, we also recognise the importance of continued local economic stimulus, and any wage increase assists broader spending and confidence in our economy.”
This mirrors what ASU members have been saying. Freezing wages hurts workers and the communities in which they live, work and spend.
