We hope that you have now heard that the Commonwealth Government yesterday announced that funding of the ACAS and RAS would be continued until March 2021.

The ASU is relieved on behalf of its members that confirmation of an extension of funding for a further nine months has been received. We also appreciate the difficulty for members of drawn-out employment and service uncertainty.

While we believe that the extension is likely a result of the increased scrutiny of the failure of the aged care system due to the Royal Commission, we hope that it’s also due to a fuller realisation of the potential implications of implementing a new system without proper consultation.

The ASU remains concerned that the underlying motivations behind the reform of aged care assessment services do not consider the public benefit of a professional age care assessment workforce or the cost to the community of its loss.

We know the value of continued vigilance and advocacy and congratulate Councils and the MAV on their work on this issue with the Commonwealth. The ASU will work with the MAV and Councils to continue this advocacy and look forward to hearing from assessment members when more information is available in April.

We hope this news provides peace of mind for you over the festive season.

The ASU is a union for people in diverse industries who deliver services that the community relies on every day.
