The Organisation Djirra may have charitable status, but Djirra’s qualified, experienced and committed workers should not be expected to work without a classification or for charity pay and conditions.

On Thursday 15 August, the ASU lodged a dispute with Djirra at the Fair  Work Commission and a conciliation hearing was scheduled for Wednesday 4 September.

The resolution in the dispute was simple – that Djirra advise all of their employees of their classification levels, in writing, ASAP”.

Djirra then elected to communicate with the ASU only via lawyers who threatened to seek costs should we continue with the dispute. We are pleased to report that despite the adversarial engagement from Djirra both pre and post dispute lodgement, we have ensured almost all Djirra staff have now been provided with a classification for the work they do

On Tuesday 3 September the ASU confirmed with your elected delegates that Djirra have now provided classifications to all staff, save two. The remaining staff are scheduled to meet with Djirra next week. Given this massive achievement the ASU agreed to Djirra’s lawyers request to have the Fair Work matter adjourned until after 16 September.

The ASU, members and delegates have agreed to the next steps:

  • The ASU to write to Djirra CEO to advise we seek the rationale and reasoning which has determined each members classification by September 18. The ASU will also advise Djirra that members will not be in a position to agree to the provided classification within the requested 2 week period.
  • The ASU will then assist members to review their classification to determine whether they agree with Djirra’s assigned classification. Please come along to our scheduled classification workshop (details below).
  • The ASU advise Djirra where members dispute their classifications and raise disputes where required.

Members have been clear with the ASU, that where they have been underpaid they request assistance to recoup their stolen wages. The ASU remain committed to assisting with this and determining each members correct classification is a major part of this process
