The ASU have been in conversation with Derwent Valley Council’s executive management team for some time in an attempt to address widespread and systematic underpayment of workers at The Valley Children’s Services.
This week we received notification from the management team that the second round of back pay in relation to this matter would be made in the coming pay cycle.
This is great news for those who were impacted by a range of issues relating to the timesheets, the lack of payment for overtime worked in excess of 76 ordinary hours per fortnight as well as attendance at staff meetings after hours for which ordinary time pay was being received for the first hour, instead of overtime, in contradiction to the Derwent Valley Council Enterprise Agreement.
This is an example of where it pays to be union.
Without the assistance of the ASU, the staff at the child care centre would have continued to be paid incorrectly and individual members would likely have had to raise the issue through legal proceedings in the Federal Circuit Court.
The ASU was able to work collaboratively with the management team at DVC to ensure these underpayments were rectified in a timely manner and that issues were addressed to avoid the same thing again in the future.
