My name is Craig Dickinson. I am employed as a Plant Operator with the Kingborough Council based on Bruny Island, where I live with my partner Karen.
I have been with Kingborough Council for the past 10 years.
I have previously worked throughout Australia and New Zealand within the Oil and Gas exploration industry which involved conducting seismic surveys, primarily in remote locations across the country, often in deserts such as the Great Sandy, Gibson, Tanami and Simpson. The working conditions were extremely arduous without the support of any Unions being present.
With recent stints with Boeing Australia based out of Exmouth in Western Australia and Telstra based at Yulara (Uluru) I saw first-hand the unfairness of the “Workchoices” policy implemented by the Howard Government. This prompted me to take a greater interest in workplace politics due to the lack of union representation and workplace bullying by employers within these organisations.
I have been a union member for 30 years, and I thought it was time to put my hand up as a Delegate to educate my fellow employees (and employers) on the importance of knowing and standing up for your rights which promotes a fairer and healthier workplace for all.
It is an extension of being a Delegate that I am now also a Health and Safety Representative, Work Health and Safety Representative and a Joint Consultative Committee member at work.
With the current pandemic being used as a tool to freeze wages, and try to strip employees of their conditions, it is more important than ever for people to put up their hand and support the union movement across the Country.
