Many of you have contacted us about news that Geelong plans to stand down over 500 of its employees in leisure/recreation. Please know that we are aware of the situation and we are currently seeking an explanation from management.

The ASU will be delivering high level questions to management on the financial justification of this decision today, with plans to take any member questions directly to management over the coming days.

In our initial consultation regarding coronavirus and potential shutdowns, the ASU was assured that standing down employees without pay would be an absolute last resort. We welcome this commitment, but are concerned that Council are taking extreme action prematurely in this case, without exhausting all less drastic and harmful alternatives first.

If you are an employee who is impacted by this news, we are holding an urgent zoom meeting tonight to provide you with an update and seek direction from you. This meeting will also give you the opportunity to put questions to us that we will take to management.

DATE: Tuesday 31 March
TIME: 5.30pm
MEETING ID: 770-787-383

If you have never used zoom before, please click on the link at least thirty minutes before the meeting to download it onto your computer. If you know employees who have been impacted that aren’t yet members of the ASU, please forward them this email and encourage them to join.

We hope to see you there.
