The ASU has been notified of council’s intention to restructure employee’s shifts across St Albans and Sunshine Leisure Centre in light of the planned redevelopment of St Albans.

Along with ASU delegate Michele Sinclair, the ASU met with Human Resource and Leisure Management on 12 June 2019 to raise the following concerns:

1. Proposed spill of all shifts and refill these positions. Concerns were raised about the need for individuals to reapply for their existing positions and shift.

2. Providing the option for voluntary redundancies – HR advised that this is currently sitting with the executive team for approval.  If so approved this will mean staff who wish to leave will be provided with a redundancy.  This will reduce the number of individuals applying for roles as in the proposed structure there are more individuals then there are hours available.

3. Contracts which specify only number of hours per week without nominated shifts – The ASU believes these contracts are contrary to the terms of your Agreement. Council disagree, the ASU will continue to pursue this issue. In the interim staff who have already been provided with contracts which DO NOT specify days of the week and start and finishing times are advised to advise management they understand we are in dispute regarding this and  should not sign until the matter is resolved.

A union meeting will be held in the next fortnight (tentative set for Sunday 23 June) to discuss concerns, comments, and suggestions from members to work through with Council.

If you have any questions please contact your delegates Michele Sinclair or Matthew Mihaljevic or

P.S. – By encouraging your workmates to join the ASU we will have stronger voice for workers at Brimbank and they will have a greater voice in the restructure. It is easy for anyone who is not yet a member to join online at www.asu.asn.au/asujoin
