After many months of discussion with Council, we finally got approval for ASU delegates to meet once every 3 months.

This a huge win for the ASU, as delegates committees are imperative to the unions role in the workplace and ensuing issues that impact members are raised through the committee.

If you have anything you would like raised through your union, please speak to one of your delegates and they will raise it on your behalf through the committee.

Some of the items discussed at the recent delegates meeting were:

Rate capping campaign
Branch Executive President Billy King attended the meeting to brief delegates on the ASU’s upcoming campaign: Crisis on the frontline”.

The consistent feedback from members is that rate capping is a substantial factor in concerning impacts on local government workforce with lower wage outcomes, rise of insecure work (contractors, agency and casual hire and contracting out).

The campaign aims to put action into resolution that was passed by ASU local government delegates at the inaugural Summit in April this year which was to neutralize the adverse effects of rate capping regarding maintaining:

  • Quality council services
  • Provision of well-maintained community infrastructure
  • Secure employment, working conditions and wages

More info will be communicated on the campaign at a later date.

Access to corporate inductions
The ASU and delegates discussed the interest in attending inductions for newly employed staff to brief them on what the union does, we have this provision in most agreements across council and have requested Council allow a delegates to attend the inductions. We are currently waiting on a response.

Aged care meeting coming up
There is a members meeting coming up on 20 November at 2pm in Acacia Room to visit home carers to discuss the current environment in this space and allow opportunity for members to raise any concerns they have.
