Boroondara City Council has secretly begun the privatisation of in-home aged care without talking to elderly residents who use the service or the council workers whose jobs are at stake.
A closed Council meeting back in November about Aged Care at council and the selection of Mecwacare as the preferred new provider proves privatisation has been on-the-table at Boroondara since at least November last year. However, staff only became aware of the proposal in late February, with some finding out through clients.
Approximately 2,119 vulnerable service users will be affected, and 62 Home Support and office staff will face redundancy if councillors confirm the privatisation at the next Council meeting on 11 April.
Privatised aged care fails residents and staff. The last few years have made that very clear.
If the council outsources aged care services it will result in less qualified and lower-paid workers and ultimately inferior care for elderly members of the Boroondara community.
Boroondara City Council will be voting on this on April 11th, so we need as many signatures as possible before then to show them that we do not want aged care to be privatised in Boroondara.
