This week ASU Members and community sector leaders came together to talk about the issues our sector faces, and to hear from Senator Jenny McAllister, Shadow Assistant Minister for Communities and the Prevention of Family Violence, about the ALP’s plans for the sector if elected.
It was great to hear from Jenny, Carina Garland Labor for Chisholm, Senate candidate Linda White, ASU delegates Leahanne and Ella, ASU Branch Secretary Lisa Darmanin, Eastern Community Legal Centre CEO Michael Smith, VAADA - The Victorian Alcohol and Drug Association Executive Officer Sam Biondo, Ysas (Youth Support & Advocacy Service) CEO Andrew Bruun, drummond street services CEO Karen Field and ASU Assistant National Secretary Emeline Gaske.
Attendees spoke about the funding challenges and other pressures driving insecure work and high turnover in these vital services, and Senator McAllister spoke about Federal Labor’s commitment to reverse the under investment and neglect of the community sector and it’s workforce.
If elected, Labor has promised to:
• Introduce longer term funding cycles and 6-year funding contracts,
• Improve funding to always cover annual pay rises
• End the practice of competing on wages and conditions for contracts
• End gag clauses to allow effective advocacy
• Ensure essential services like homelessness and domestic violence services are not run for profit.

The Fair Work Commission has ruled that Boroondara Council must properly consult with the ASU and our members before they can proceed with their aged care privatisation.
But we still need to keep the pressure on - our fight is not over and what happens here could set the scene for other councils across the state.
