Today Council confirmed it would provide Additional Special Leave Arrangements for employees impacted by proposed stand downs,  and have requested more time to implement ASU recommendations that will mitigate the need for stand downs.

In a missive received this afternoon, Council informed ASU they will extend paid special leave to all staff for a further day on Monday 6 April 2020 and no staff member will be stood down without pay before Tuesday 7 April 2020

Excluding those employees covered by Schedule 9 of the Agreement from the Aquatic Lifestyle Centre and Pools who will be paid if stood down.

And that council anticipate that over the next week or two they will be in a position to implement many of the ASU’s suggestions to avoid full stand downs of all staff. This includes developing modified work instructions, rosters and putting in place proper health and safety precautions with the aim to usefully employ as many staff as possible.

According to Council, Staff will otherwise be stood down without pay from Tuesday 7 April 2020 and they will notify affected employees in due course (once those employees are identified). Council will also notify those staff who will be allocated revised rosters/duties to work during the stand down period and consult with the ASU if appropriate.

This is a much more considered approach to two weeks ago, and is in accordance with the outcomes of the Fair work commission mediation held last Saturday.

ASU will continue to monitor the situation, and there are still some work units that have not received an opportunity to advance any recommendations to avoid stand downs, and thus it is ASU’s position that they should continue to be paid their full wage until Council complies with the agreed fair work commission outcome.

If a council employee has a particular individual case of financial hardship, they are encouraged to speak to a member of councils People and Performance Unit, and make an application for additional special paid leave or paid duties.

These applications will be dealt with on a case by case basis, and are at the discretion of the Council. The ASU is here to help members and provide advice and assistance in making these claims.
