The Australian Services Union welcomes the Andrews Government’s announced investment of $5.3 billion to construct more than 12,000 new homes in Melbourne and regional Victoria.
This will go a long way to bridge the social and public housing gap that exists in Victoria compared to other Australian states.
This announcement furthers the Andrews Government’s reputation of being proudly progressive and focusing on all Victorians to provide fairness and opportunity.
We are looking forward to working with the Andrews Government, as the new housing stock is constructed, to make sure there are sufficient community sector housing workers to provide ongoing services to residents of the new homes.
This COVID-19 pandemic has been really tough for all Victorians. However, out of the terrible events of this year, we can take lessons about what is really important – to ensure a fair, compassionate and safe community. One of those lessons is that as a community, we are all in this together.
We live in a society, not an economy and stable housing for all is a foundation of a fair society.
The ASU looks forward to further announcements by the state government to increase funding for vital community sector services in this year’s budget.
