The ASU recently made a submission to the review of local government being undertaken by the state government.

The major themes of ASU members’ conversations with ASU officials over recent years were brought together and included in the submission.

Some of the major issues that have been picked up in the submission are

  • The importance of secure work in local government
  • The need for greater transparency and accountability of councils so communities know more about council activity
  • More opportunities for communities and workers to have a say on council decisions
  • A Gender Equality Act to make councils workplaces where everyone is treated equally and the full skills of all workers and used to deliver services for communities
