ASU members at Moreland libraries have set an example of how to keep workers safe.

ASU members who deliver tech help across Moreland’s five libraries came together around a shared COVID safety concern with running hour-long in-person sessions with library patrons.

They took their concerns to management, who initially opposed any immediate changes to the work practices of workers who run sessions for library users.

Using Moreland’s OHS issue resolution procedure and the OHS Act, these active ASU members were able to rebuff management’s opposition,

Members identified alternative ways to perform their duties to keep both workers and patrons of the libraries safe.

Ensuring their ongoing safety, ASU members won an immediate stop to the sessions until HSRs conduct a full risk assessment!

By reminding management that work health and safety is union business, ASU members have reduced the risk to themselves and library users of COVID transmission.
