Recently, the ASU and delegates have been in dispute with Maroondah over the induction of new staff clause in your enterprise agreement. The clause provides for all new staff to be introduced to their local area delegate. This is a great clause and opportunity for union delegates to inform new starters of the importance of joining the union.
However, Maroondah HR believe the word ‘introduce’ does not have the same meaning as ‘meet’, and therefore have been in dispute on this matter for months now. They believe you can be introduced to someone without having met them, virtually or physically.
The ASU lawyers have a different take on this, and that was not the intention of that clause, so we were about to file an application to the Fair Work Commission to provide their interpretation.
But fortunately, council have since conceded and agreed to implement a plan for all new staff since May 2019 to be introduced to the ASU delegates in their respective areas.
Do you want to build power in the workplace and have a bigger voice? By being a member of your union, your voice won’t be the only one.
By encouraging your workmates to join the ASU we will have a stronger voice for workers at Maroondah. It is easy for anyone who is not yet a member to join online at www.asu.asn.au/asujoin
