City of Greater Bendigo - Urgent Safety Notice

10 April 2024

The ASU has been in communication with council since yesterday regarding concerns over potential silica exposure in concreting works. Despite our advice to cease these activities until they are compliant with regulations, the council has unbelievably refused to do so, all whilst knowing the dangers you may be facing.

Considering this, the ASU strongly recommends that members exercise their rights to refuse to carry out unsafe work. It is imperative to remember that you cannot be disciplined for prioritising your safety.

Inhalation of silica dust from activities like cutting or grinding can lead to silicosis, lung cancer, kidney disease, and autoimmune disorders.

Your well-being is paramount, and any risks in the workplace must be taken seriously.

We urge all members to remain vigilant and prioritise safety above all else. If you encounter any unsafe conditions or have concerns regarding silica exposure or any other workplace hazards, please don't hesitate to reach out to your ASU Delegates or HSR’s for assistance.

The ASU takes members health and safety seriously and we will exhaust all possible avenues to compel the council to cease actions that endanger your well-being.

Please pass this message on to your colleagues who may not be members of the ASU to ensure their safety as well.

Members will be updated as this issue continues to unfold.
