Your super insurance may cover more than you realise

01 July 2026

If illness or injury means you can’t work, the financial pressure can build quickly. Many people assume their only option is workers’ compensation, but that’s not always the case.

What many workers don’t realise is that their superannuation often includes insurance designed to support them when they’re unable to work.

What super insurance can help with
Most super funds automatically include insurance, which may cover a wide range of conditions, not just physical injuries.

This can include support if you’re unable to work due to:
  • Mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety or PTSD
  • Long term or “invisible” illnesses like Multiple Sclerosis or chronic fatigue
  • Cancer treatment or ongoing side effects
  • Serious health conditions linked to workplace stress
The key question is whether your condition prevents you from doing your usual job.

What many people don’t know
If you’ve had super, you may also have had insurance, often without realising it. Your super insurance may still apply even if:
  • Your condition isn’t work related
  • You don’t qualify for workers’ compensation
  • Your WorkCover claim has been rejected
  • Your illness or injury developed over time

The right support matters
Insurance claims can be complex, and dealing with insurers can feel overwhelming, especially when your health is already affected. Getting advice early can help you understand your options and avoid unnecessary stress.
