Union Win for workers safety in Tasmania
01 July 2024
Unions have had a huge win for worker safety in Tasmania with the passage of industrial manslaughter laws in the House of Assembly.
We congratulate the Tasmanian Labor Party who put forward the Work Health and Safety Amendment (Safer Workplaces) Bill 2024 to introduce an industrial manslaughter offence into our state’s WHS laws. This Bill passed the Parliament with the support of David O’Byrne, the Greens and Kristy Johnston.
The ASU, along side Unions Tasmania have championed
industrial manslaughter legislation for Tasmania for many years.
We have advocated relentlessly to secure this important safety reform for Tasmanians despite opposition from the Liberal Government.
After a fatality in Local Government last year, we pay particular solidarity to our members and the community at West Coast Council at this time.
A heartfelt gratitude to all who have supported this cause, in particular those family members whose loved ones never returned from work, and who pushed through unimaginable grief in the hope that others won’t have to go through what they did. We honour those families whose courage and advocacy have been instrumental in this landmark achievement.
