MEB update – Have your say on our draft Log of Claims

13 May 2025

Our historic application for a MEB to cover workers at 10 metropolitan councils is making progress through the Fair Work Commission, with a ‘mention’ (preliminary hearing) listed for tomorrow (Wednesday 14 May).

Last week we received confirmation that 8 of the councils will be fighting against our application, whilst Greater Dandenong has consented to the application and Hobsons Bay will ‘neither consent nor object’.

It is concerning that some employers are desperately trying to avoid workers having greater power through the MEB, rather than simply respecting the will of the majority of their employees.

We will provide further updates following the FWC mention tomorrow.

Have your say on claims
In consultation with your delegates, we have developed a proposed log of claims for the MEB, consistent with the principles we have been discussing throughout this campaign:
  1. Protecting and preserving all local conditions (i.e. your existing EA), whilst allowing for local bargaining to occur as part of the MEB;
  2. Establishing a small number of common conditions that will apply to all councils; and
  3. Keeping our main focus on winning a strong pay rise as quickly as possible (including back pay).

Our draft log of claims includes a claim for wage increases of –
    Year 1: 10% (or flat $ increase, whichever is greater)
    Year 2: 4% (or flat $ increase, whichever is greater)
    Year 3: 4% (or flat $ increase, whichever is greater)
    Year 4: 4% (or flat $ increase, whichever is greater)

We now circulate the draft log for consideration and feedback from members:

Your ASU organiser and delegates will soon commence discussions to develop your workplace-specific claims for local bargaining, which may also include seeking formal member endorsement of our core MEB claims.
