Housing Reference Group
02 July 2026
The ASU's Housing Reference Group has met five times this year and already had big impact! Our Branch Executive Motion that was passed on 20 April 2026, has now also been passed as an Urgency Resolution at the ALP State Conference in May in the following form:
The ASU calls on the Victorian Government to:
- Fund the housing system to a level that ensures that workers in housing and homelessness, and other social and community services, are not exposed to unsafe workplaces;
- Halt the demolition of Melbourne’s public housing towers;
- Keep public housing on sites where the towers currently sit;
- Invest more in public housing in the Victorian Budget on a permanent basis;
- Ensure that a thorough, transparent and independent investigation is undertaken to uphold the provision of existing public housing stock; and
- Ensure that every worker has access to safe, affordable and secure housing.
This motion is important because it gives us another powerful way to keep pressure on the State Labor Government to act. It’s another tool to help us advocate for proper funding, protect public housing, and improve worker safety, showing that workers are organised, united, and using every avenue available to drive change.
