Why is standing together as a union important to you?
Without solidarity, there’s nothing. The mighty ASU have only achieved hard fought wins like Equal Pay or Portable Long Service Leave for our sector because we stood together as a union, not asking politely, but demanding better for all. And we’re only going to win our Work Value case which will have significant and real improvements to workers lives by standing together.

What is a recent workplace win—big or small—that you or your team achieved?
Members at Wombat successfully negotiated a new enterprise agreement, the 3rd in 13 years. We were able to introduce new entitlements like 10 days of paid reproductive leave and 10 days of paid gender affirmation leave, as well as paid wellbeing leave. We doubled our paid parental leave entitlements and ensured super will now be paid on parental leave whilst also increasing existing entitlements like bereavement leave, cultural leave, and strengthened clauses to protect pay and classifications.

What is a common misconception that the general public or management has about your role as a delegate?
The union only causes trouble. In reality, delegates are an integral link between the branch and members on the ground. Day to day delegates might be ensuring members understand and access their entitlements correctly or be providing practical support to members in disciplinary meetings, whilst feeding back to the branch about other industrial matters affecting members lives that lead to sector campaigning. With that said, delegates do cause good trouble for workplaces that undervalue and mistreat their workers.

Do you have any hobbies, side-projects, or hidden talents outside of work that surprise your colleagues?
On my days off or weekend, you’ll likely find me doing what I would call amateur woodworking.
