ASU members endorse STRIKE ACTION on Tuesday 5 May

20 April 2026

On Friday 17 April, the ASU held a mass members’ meeting with over 400 Local Government union members across the 8 MEB councils.

At the meeting, members passed two resolutions to endorse strike action:
  1. ASU members endorse taking strike action on Tuesday 5 May.
  2. The strike action will last for 24 hours.

Please RSVP for the action here.

Your participation in the full strike action and your attendance at the rally will give us the best shot at winning fair wages and sector-leading conditions.

Strike action is the highest level of Protected Industrial Action with the maximum impact. Only by maximising our participation can we ensure the greatest impact.

Over the next two weeks, you need to:
  • RSVP for the event
  • Ensure your co-workers have also RSVP’d
  • Convince your co-workers to join the ASU to participate in the strike action.

We have seen hundreds of workers join the ASU to participate in work bans and expect more to join to take strike action. The more non-members who join, the greater the impact of this historic action.

FAQs
  1. I am an ASU member at one of the 8 MEB Councils, can I stay home on the day of the action?
If you choose to stay home on the day of the action, your participation will have less impact. Unless your employer, the public, and the Allan Government see a mass of workers at this rally, their position will NOT change.

We are asking you to attend this rally to ensure it has the maximum impact.

  2. I am an ASU member at one of the 8 MEB councils, will I be paid if I go on strike?
Under the Fair Work Act, workers who go on strike cannot be paid for the time they spend on strike. If you participate in the 24-hour action, you will not receive one day of pay.

  3. I am an ASU member at one of the 8 MEB Councils, can I take Annual or Sick Leave so my pay isn't docked?
If you apply for Annual Leave or an RDO on the day of the action, your request will likely be rejected. Even if it is approved, your employer is likely to cancel it.

We strongly recommend you do not take Sick Leave on the day of the action unless you are genuinely sick and you provide your employer with a medical certificate. Your employer will suspect you are not genuinely sick if you choose to take Sick Leave on the day of the action.

  4. I work at one of the 8 Councils but I am not an ASU member, can I participate?
No, you are not eligible to take strike action unless you are an ASU member. Even if you are a member of another union, you cannot participate in this action.

You can join the ASU here.

  5. I work at a different Council, can I participate in the rally?
If you would like to attend the rally but you do not work at one of the 8 Councils, your attendance and support will be welcomed, but you will need to attend on your own time and/or organise to take leave with your employer.
