The ASU is aware of the Shire of Campaspe’s recent decision to begin the process to cease providing direct Home and Community Care services through the Commonwealth Home Support Program.

This is extremely disappointing news given the state and federal governments have both recently committed to provide ongoing funding till 2022.

The elderly and vulnerable community members who receive this vital service will in our view be worse off as a result of this council decision. The ASU’s position is that Shire of Campaspe can and should continue providing this service, along with every other council and Shire in Victoria still in the service. Rate payers should demand that this vital service remain within the Shire’s control.

What Next?

ASU Branch Secretary Lisa Darmanin will be writing to the Shire of Campaspe Mayor, councillors and acting CEO, requesting a meeting to discuss this decision as soon as possible.

The ASU and local community campaigned and worked tirelessly with the City of Greater Bendigo when they made a similar decision about 2 years ago. It should be noted that the City of Greater Bendigo to this day has retained their HACC services within council. We will fight hard on behalf of our members and the community to pressure the Shire of Campaspe to retain this service, as we did with Bendigo.

We will notify members as this matter progresses and will be looking to set up some member meetings to discuss this situation.
